The National Internet exchange of India is the meeting point of the ISPs in India. Its main purpose is to facilitate handing over of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members. This will enable more efficient use of international bandwidth, save foreign exchange. It will further improve the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by being able to avoid multiple international hops and thus lowering delays. NIXI will be managed and operated on a Neutral basis, in line with the best practices for such initiatives globally and will be a Not-for-Profit operation. The initial cost of the project is being provided for by a Grant from the Deptt. of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India. It is envisaged that from the Second year of operations, the venture will become financially self sustaining and all surplus income will be used to meet the objectives of NIXI.
